le nxne summary:
galine convinces me to go to the reverb now mag showcase w/ her on fri (despistado, feist, nathan lawr and the minotaurs, the infamous kate maki, and i can put my arm back on you can't), so we go.
dave (chart mag intern guy) drops his friend off w/ us (turns out i've seen friend's student films before, but had no idea what he looked like), we go to reverb early early keener early to ensure that we get in, we find a good spot by the couches in an elevated corner of the venue,
band w/ the really long name is alright, but not spectactular,
cameron (worked w/ him at journal) & friend show up,
we throw tampons onstage for kate maki, now cover girl (i am lying about the tampon thing),
cgal melts as nathan lawr comes on (as she has already stated, she sort of proclaims her love for him, he responds kindly, i pretend not to know her),
feist does a real cool instant voice sampler thing so she can layer harmony on her vocals (howie day does that too), she teases w/ a 30-min set (full show the next night), including a little of the intro to "almost crimes,"
despistado BLOWS me away.
really, i wasn't expecting to like 'em that much. they blew out the lights and their mics, and it was still good. they kind of remind me of the constantines, but they play more major-key-ish/less-serious songs. maybe. i dunno. i was too immersed in getting my face blown off.
i've gotta say though--the best part of the night had to be when we did our crouched waddle thing down the concrete. reaaallly. i so wish we could've filmed that somehow.
saturday nite i went to see feist/gentleman reg w/ wesley. another friend was supposed to come, but something always seems to go wrong when we plan to go somewhere, so she dropped out and i had to sell her tkt. strangely enough, i sold it to a girl in soundscapes.
the mod club was hilarious (the kate bush songs pre-show were just too much for wes). it was like playing a game of "spot the musician." wesley thinks esthero passed by us. dan from tND did too, i think.
the show itself was fantastic. i really enjoyed myself.
feist had her french backup band this time, and she had a girl projecting images on an overhead--i loved it! this girl had everything for props--a wig, twigs, flowers, cut-outs, coloured paper, she drew inky pictures on the spot--wes said it distracted him from the songs though. :D he consciously had to tell himself to pay attention to the music as well. i thought it was awesome. a lot of what she did complemented the music well. she even danced in front of the overhead to get her shadow doing dance moves. feist and band were great too, of course. and this time she played mushaboom. :) i didn't see any bss-ers, but the place was pretty packed by the time she came on, so who knows. feist has such great stage presence...it must've been weird for her since she probably knew 75% of the ppl in the crowd. definitely a memorable show.
afterwards, we were gonna head home, but i noticed dave had called a bunch of times (i'd called him earlier 'cause i'd wanted to find someone to buy my extra tkt...blahblahblah), and through him i discovered that hugh dillon (singer of now-defunct headstones, at least i think they're still defunct) was playing a solo set at the elmo, and after him it'd be white cowbell oklahoma. i'd heard all kinds of crazy shite about them, so i decided to go. wes couldn't stay that late, but he came w/ me to find dave at the green room (we ran into another guy from school there--the same guy i saw at the elmo stars cd release party last year) and we sat there for a while. we were introduced to some of dave's "artsy" friends, i was forced to listen to gossiping amongst males, noticed a guy who'd been introduced as a cartoonist for something or other making words out of what looked like multicoloured little pieces of candlewax on the table (i think they were supposed to be celebrating his birthday...he looked sort of bored, poor guy)...finally, i looked at the time and realized we were missing hugh dillon. walked w/ wes to spadina, he left us there, i was paranoid about not making it into the elmo, turns out i was worried over nothing, we missed all of dillon's set, i ditched dave when he went to the washroom (he made me escort him there, the weenie), got a good spot in the crowd...
alright. white cowbell friggin' oklahoma.
they are a band you should see live at least once in your life. i wouldn't really listen to their records (if they have any) at home or anything, but they do know how to put on an entertaining show (if you can tolerate the very un-PC antics they pull). there seem to be a zillion guys in the band, but only eight (or nine?) were there on saturday.
i have now seen:
- a "sheriff" give some drawling speech and then playing nothing but a wooden block (or cowbell, whatever) for the rest of the night
- fireworks going off from the centre of a stage
- a girl wearing a short, coloured wig (purple, i think) who never stopped smiling stripping down to only her panties and some shiny star pasties to cover her nipples sort of shimmying around onstage w/ the band (her name was something like "annie mae")
- men using a chainsaw to cut through various large stuffed animal toys and then throwing said chopped up pieces of toys into the audience, w/ stuffing flying all over the place (the legs of one poor cute bear ended up tossed onto a ceiling rafter or something)
- various "lil' pretty ladies" being pulled up onstage to dance w/ the band
and the pièce de resistance,
- one of the guitarists stripping down to nothing but his b-day suit, playing his guitar w/ his dick (w/ some sort of metal thing that helped him slide it) while 2 girls from the audience held each end of the guitar
...yeeah. so i kind of regret having such a good view now. but besides all that insanity, they did have a lot of zeal and they hit the crowd like a tight force of sound (oh, and their mics went out at one pt too). i guess they were the stereotypical redneck rock'n'roll band, and now i can honestly say that i've witnessed an "authentic" rock show.
