so are you guys coming? i have no idea about what's going on. i guess i'll find out soon though, since if you are, you must be on the road now.
anyway, 6 of us from the journal went down to the toronto star mentoring workshop yesterday, and i loved it. it was really, really fantastic. we had to leave for toronto at 6 a.m. (and i was kinda late), but it was worth it. we thought we were late (an hour!), but it turned out alright.
i could go through a looong and detailed (and most likely tediously boring) account of it all for you guys, but i'll resist temptation and say this:
- we came the farthest (every other paper there was from toronto--ryerson, york and u of t had like 2 or more papers each--except wilfrid laurier's paper, which is only an hour's drive away)
- we got to ask investigative reporters, editors and sports editors questions, and they told us about how they got into journalism and how they started at the star...but the best person we got to talk to was peter howell, the film critic that i've been reading since i was in high school. he was so damned cool, and he answered a lot of things that were really important to know about entertainment writing. i used to e-mail him, and some of the stuff he said was the same stuff he'd told me back then.
- we got a tour of the newsroom, which was awesome, and we saw the entertainment section of the room, and it was hilarious to see how messy it was--all the desks had STACKS of stuff spilling all over the place...promo dvd's, press kits, cd's...crazy. our a&e asst. eds were so relieved to see that. we got to meet some of the photographers and look at all the famous pics taken for the paper...
- they fed us so much food!!! it was crazy. we had breakfast, lunch and a sort-of dinner at the reception after the tour. writers, editors and photographers joined us, and there was wine, beer, chicken satay, spring rolls, a cheese platter, pizza...crazy. we mingled w/ the other student papers, alison and i went nuts when we saw christopher hutsul (a life section writer)--we were both such toronto star geeks--alison got intoxicated enough to talk to him and now can use him as a contact, which is awesome, it was just really surreal.
- the 5 others i was w/ represented us well--they asked the speakers great, intelligent questions and we were friendly to everybody. we were also always the first to crowd around a table of food and probably the most intoxicated ppl at the reception--w00h00.
- ooh--and they gave us souvenirs! stainless steel coffee thermos things and toronto star beer glasses! heehee. wesley was jealous, 'cause when he went to their vaughn press centre last year, all he got was a pen.
anyway, i'm glad i got to go. i think it'd be awesome to work at the star (which is what i think the star was trying to make us think, and yep, it sure worked on me)--too bad it's so competitive to get in. i think i might try to apply for their youth employment program thing next year though...
