ha. they were $12 exactly. no fees if you get 'em straight from the 'shoe.
wish i could go to the phoenix...call me tomorrow and see if i'm home...

for future reference, when i get back on my own comp.

hi, kate maki! :P

i'm listening to billy talent and thinking...
FUCK. regardless of all these wee girls going around claiming to love them, rach von & i are the ultimate billy talent girls. we were there with ears plugged half joking, half liking, what we heard during the mtv campus invasion a couple years back. rachie the girl you work/ed with knew the bassist, jon, right? he's the one that's somewhat 'related' to me through marriage. *muahahah* how crazy. he seems to be the whore of the group, knowing everyone;)

christina we fucking rock the geekdome of summer whorishconcertness. numero 1 & 2, now that's brag-worthy;) i love it. how much did they come to in total??

this is, how it, it goes...

phoenix tomorrow, anyone?
i'm in dire need of getting drunk.
:)

leslie feist, june 12, mod club? anyone?

hmm...i gotta keep track of this...sondre lerche, three gut knight won, possible bss shows, feist, ben kweller...lollapalooza? hillside? i need mooooooneyyyyyy.

the over the top fest is also this weekend. i wish i could go see the trachtenburg family slideshow players on saturday. argh.

addendum: tND are playing the toronto downtown jazz fest on canada day at nathan phillips square. except it's $20. i dunno if i can afford to pay $20. but if it's at nathan phillips square, won't i be able to hear 'em regardless?!

the director of the women wrestlers docu is on the cover of now mag this week. she was at the show yesterday, too.

oh maaan. i went to see neko case/carolyn mark/kelly hogan (aka the corn sisters) tonite at the horseshoe w/ some journal ppl. sooo good. i'd never seen any of them live before, so i really had no expectations (although wesley and kate kept raving about how amazing carolyn mark's hootenany a few years back in k-town had been), but even if i had had any, they would've been blown away! have you guys heard of neko case? she also sings w/ the new pornographers. i've never heard her sing any of her own songs, so it was a little strange for me to hear her singing something other than "the laws have changed" or "letter from an occupant." kelly hogan and carolyn mark flanked neko case on the stage and they all sang kickass original and cover country songs. they have beautiful, distinct voices and spunky personalities. they also kept requesting shots of jagermeister. :) there were two guitar guys in the back, and the girls sang "canadian boy" for them. i have to find that song now--it's so cute! the place was pretty packed too, even after neko case has played about a bazillion shows here already this month...we were originally supposed to go to the first of two nights at the matador (this crazy after-hours bar on college, i think--the shows didn't start until something like 2 in the morning!), which was at the start of the month, but that didn't work out, so luckily they added on this show. she'd also played 2 nights at lee's w/ the sadies before that. so yeah--since this was her 5th show in toronto this month, it was a pretty damned impressive turnout! the crowd was pretty cool, too (not even nearly as annoying as some k-town crowds, anyway). as always for the horseshoe, it was quite eclectic (young, old, cowboy, non-cowboy). all the performers were walking around mingling before their set, and we managed to secure a decent spot near the front. oh man, it was so awesome--kelly hogan had contributed some songs to this docu that's playing at hot docs now about women wrestlers in the '50s, and some of them were there (and one turned out to be neko case's aunt?!), and one of them could yodel, so she yodelled a song for us!!! it was insanely cool!!! :D

we had dinner at the bishop & the belcher beforehand, watching the leafs kick some butt (finally) tonite. a friend of ours was at the game. another guy that we were supposed to meet came _really_ late, so we didn't find him until the end of the show. i think wes and him are still out drinking now, but kate, who's from the m-dot (haha) as well, wanted to leave, so she drove me home too.

ahh, a promising start to this summer of shows.

p.s. cgal, we have tkts #1 & 2 for night one of the three gut 4th anniversary bash (avec CtD). we're such geeks!

what are the details for the cuff the duke show and possible bss show?

anyone want to visit the ROM some friday evening this summer (it's free after 4). i havent been in ages.

i dont know if i will make all my deadlines before the weeks end. i think i may be working at the airport again.... atleast for the time being. on the positive, no drug test this year.

when i was up late last night i did encode a feature on Kingston's most active ghost. il post it on my ftp sometime, i wonder if it was on the haunted walk tour.

jack white is making the rounds with loretta lyn next week. the songs do sound really good.

christina: of course! i'm definitely coming to cuff the duke!!!! wouldn't miss it!! & it's at the horseshoe, so it's bound to be a thrilling time!!
& ahem ahem!!!! couldn't you just address that last post to me!? lol. WHERE WHERE WHERE!?!?!?

radiohead might have to pull out of their coachella gig, thom's voice was not good for melbourn.

last thing--my sympatico addy will definitely cease working in a few days...so don't write me there anymore. :( i will miss that addy so much. :(

ahhh...and another thing. did i mention the cuff the duke show from the 17th at all? they blew me away--AGAIN!!! i brought christine, and she seemed to enjoy 'em as well. they played lots of new stuff, and they brought that vibes guy w/ the big curly hair that you guys mentioned. it's funny--every time christine goes to the washroom at the grad club, one of the musicians ends up being in there at the same time. it happened w/ martina sorbara a few months ago, and again for CtD. the opener, kate maki (i think she opened for the show you guys went to as well), was in there, and she had her suitcase full of cd's open on the floor...?! when we left the washroom, wayne petti followed us down the stairs. he looked goood. cut his hair or something. during the show, he walked into me twice. it was awkward. the first time, he was trying to get up on the benches and then onto the table off to the side of the room, but i couldn't read his mind, so i was trying to move out of the way but had no idea which way i should turn. he also sort of pushed christine out of the way or something. hmph. the second time, he just walked into me and then went to the other side of the room. i think the bucket of beer they had onstage might've had something to do w/ it.
nevertheless, a rollicking good time. i've never seen them play in toronto, however (just guelph, kingston and kingston), so that should be interesting. cgal, you're definitely coming, right??? i can't wait to hear their new cd. they're recording it in may.

maan, if i was a rich foodie, i'd so go to this. such amazing chefs! wish i could afford to go to susur or eigensinn farm! and here they're both in one place! except it's $400 fucking dollars per person!!!!!

hey, thanks for the b-day wishes! :) it was a good day...i'd been anticipating rain all week (stupid weathernetwork.ca), but it turned out to be quite a decently-weathered day! [if you wanna skip all the bullshit i'm about to write, there are msgs for some of you below it all, names in bold.]
the potluck picnic in the park was a bit strange, but it was alright. everyone was late (including me), and it mainly consisted of appetizers and dessert (save karen's mac & cheese casserole and sean's tuna sandwiches), but it was cool. christine, her housemates and mike brought frisbees and i brought my basketball. i said my goodbyes to gemma, azé and natalie...i hope they'll be okay next year! afterwards, it was just me, christine, phyo and mike, and we played 21 and horse and then we went on the slides and the swings. i'm a loser and i'm the only one who can't run up the slide. :(
ooh...some ppl actually got me stuff! christine got me the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy omnibus (the complete trilogy of five...winkwink), andria got me the deluxe edition of jeff buckley's live at sin-e (she also said the supposedly hot clerk at indigo wants my # now...haha), wade & phyo got me the wilco "i am trying to break your heart" making-of dvd (!!!!!) and suzanne gave me some sort of french manicure set...

my friend karen (who is going to be working at the cannes film fest next month...bum!!!) took me out to dinner at this really cute, upscale-ish restaurant called allie lou's, and there was a piano player on the second floor where we were eating! we requested "the rainbow connection" but she couldn't remember how to play it. the food was alright, but it was the ambiance that was really cool. we skipped dessert there to go to white mtn (homemade ice cream and waffle cones) next door, but the lineup was insane, so we tried beaver tails instead. eh. nothing special.

after that, we had to hightail it back to my place (w/ our friend melissa picking us up since she lives close by there) b/c everyone who was going to bingo was supposed to be there by 9:30 so we could make the 10 p.m. session. besides karen, melissa and me, christine, marcin, wesley, thulasi, andria, phyo, rachel, elena and kate came to bingo as well. it was SO FUN. you don't understand. i was so pumped for it. i had my visor, my dobbers (pink and blue), my lucky charm (chuther)...the works. melissa was the only person who'd actually gone before, so she sort of knew what she was doing and she explained how it worked to us. she actually won $1000 the last time she went. this time she won again! but only $15. andria won $25! i won nothing. chuther--you let me down!!! we were being kind of loud b/c we really had no idea what was going on at first, and we got yelled at by the crazy k-town bingo ppl around us! they were like, "shuuut uuup!!! be quiet over there!!!" yikes. such seriously intense bingo players. there were some _really_ friendly bingo ladies who went around helping us and explaining stuff to us though, and i'm glad they were there, or we would've been totally lost. it's a whole other world when you play bingo. kinda cool though. i think everyone enjoyed it...i sure did!!!

afterwards, everyone but andria, christine, marcin and wesley flaked out and went home (it was around midnight), but the rest of us moved onwards! btw--have i mentioned that i've been sick this whole time?! i wasn't going to let that stop me! i'd completely lost my voice (you should've seen me at joel plaskett...more on that later), and i could barely breathe, but i didn't care. so we dropped off everyone else and then went to the brew pub (aka the kingston brewing company). there, i took a year and a half to not even finish my strongbow and we played a raucously good game of trivial pursuit. oh yeah, and before that, marcin gave me a cuban cigar (fresh from cuba) for my b-day. i'd vowed never to smoke those evil bastards again after my hallowe'en/christine's b-day experience, but do i ever listen to myself? nah. this time it was a lot better though. upon leaving the brew co., i spotted their old antique car parked outside and attempted to steal it (the door was unlocked), but i couldn't figure out how to hotwire a car, so i just stole their sign instead. wesley was mad at me for doing that. oh well. and friggin' marcin still has my victoria's secret credit card!!! he better buy himself some nice bras, or i'll be angry.

rewind to thursday: some journal ppl and i went to visit the ottawa citizen. they'd prepared a day for us to go and talk to some journalists and observe how they ran the paper, and it was really interesting (kind of like the toronto star workshop, but for a much smaller paper). we rented some minivans and drove to ottawa for the day. unfortunately, i was already sick by then, so i kind of dozed during some of the talks, but it was still a good experience. and they fed us a chinese food buffet for lunch. the editor-in-chief used to be the ed-in-chief for the journal, but he wasn't there that day. neither was one of the crime reporters, who also used to be a journal ed-in-chief (when i was in 2nd year). maybe they were avoiding us?! :D we got to listen in on the senior editors' meetings about what would go in the paper the next day (the 23rd), and we heard right away when the senators fired their coach (one of the interns immediately got up and went to work). it was also cool to meet one of the music critics. she talked about reviewing concerts (she'd gone to see rufus wainwright/teitur the night before and was seeing 50 cent that night). before we left, they gave us denim baseball caps, pens and pads and then we were on our way back to k-town. i think all the ppl in my minivan are still gonna be on staff next year, so it made me kinda sad...but the a&e editor for next year is awesome. i'm not worried about that section at all. he knows his shit, and he's only in first year! remember the name brendan kennedy...i'm pretty sure he'll be writing for something awesome in the future.
the joel plaskett emergency was playing the grad club that same night, and a bunch of ppl went. wesley and i met up w/ my friend rachel and we went to pick up some ppl at the journal house (alison, cameron, kate and dave). dave got a job at chart for the summer. lucky ass. he's too cool for me now. remember his name, too--he'll most likely go far. and when he does, i'll get all cheesy and talk about how he used to try to distract me by playing on his guitar and singing the copy editor song. that, and he got me a harmonica for secret santa!
we got to the grad club, and there were so many other familiar faces there...it was like a last goodbye to all the regular concertgoers...there were meredith and jessi linn, gord (who's going to osgoode), ryan and wade, brendan, calvin, this guy who i thought was the guy i'd volunteered w/ at the k-town film fest, but it turns out it wasn't him (that was embarrassing...they really are pretty cookiecutter though--tall, skinny white dudes w/ black frame glasses)...
the show itself KICKED ASS. oh man. he was playing w/ ian mcgettigan, so it was like a mini thrush hermit reunion...when he walked by us to go onstage, rachel, kate and calvin were laughing 'cause i was swooning...rachel had never seen or heard much of him before, so she was completely blown away. her and wade went out and bought all his cd's the next day. he and the band played everything...including covers of everything. they did an insanely kickass version of "hey ya." they played "come on, teacher" last, which will be my personal anthem next year. i love them. they rock. raaaaawk. and 2 of them will be on cbc at 4:30 today and tomorrow as friggin' camp counsellors for rock camp. how freakin' AWESOME is that?!? i've known about that show for over a month now, and i still can't wrap my head around how sweet that is.

aaand rewind more:
wednesday--this guy named liam in film organized a screening of the collage animation and experimental films ppl made for their classes. it was held at the qp (queen's pub). that was probably the last time i'll ever see mr. semi-hot film boy, and i flaked out yet again and said nothing. guess i'll never get a copy of that first-year video project we did...maybe he'll become famous one day. then i'll be able to say that he might still own a video of my friends wearing bathing suits (and me wearing his mom's sundress?!) in stauffer library. wesley and nick's film was really cute. i got to hear them recording their sound effects. they made "tennis ball noises" and dog barks and everything all by themselves. it was kinda hilarious. after the screening, i ran into wesley's hs friend, will. he'll still be there next year, so hopefully we'll meet up then. some of us went to the sleepless goat afterwards for dessert and coffee. it was nice.

last friday--went to see kill bill 2, loooooved it, a bunch of journal ppl were there as well, went to the qp afterwards w/ christine, mike (going to unb for law--must visit!) and sean (going to london for latin/classics--wish i could visit!). the "film crew" was there as well, so wesley and semi-hot film boy were there. i left earlier than them, got home at 3, was on the comp, suddenly heard someone trying to open the door that leads from our washroom to the house downstairs...it's locked, so they couldn't open it unless they used force...msged my friend on msn, she called wesley and told him to come back immediately, he and this other guy come in carrying shovels...i'm panicked and kind of shaking...we call downstairs, and it turns out it was the landlady's son. i think he was drunk. i was still shaken up, so we went to this girl's house and watched the movie version of clue w/ its 3 endings until 5 a.m. (it was a sidesplittingly funny movie, btw).

alright, i think that's everything. i moved back here on saturday. i'm still a bit sick. if there are big typos above, i apologize, but i'm hopped up on some slightly powerful drugs right now and things are starting to look blurry.

cgal--yes, i have seen the vid for elevator love letter. torq acting drunk. greaat stuff. i don't think i can make it to the unicorns on thurs. :( you didn't get tkts yet though, did you? i'm gonna help christine move back on fri, so i'll need to wake up early. we need to go out next week though. and we should go on a job hunt together!! i need $$$$$!!!!!

crissandra--you're in fer ben kweller--awesome! i need to seriously make a list of shows i plan to go to, or i'll never be able to keep track.

karen--you _are_ quick! i got yer msn, too--thanks!! you were the first!!!

alright, head spinning...must..stop..typ in g
.

christina:
did you know there was a video for 'elevator love letter'? they played it on the wedge last night. so cute.
(that, and i totally took me back to that night and i thought, shit. that was fucking fun. we went through just about everything.;)

ben kweller!! june 10!! horseshoe!! $10 (i think)!

wow, this is the quietest blogger has been for awhile.

kb2 was good but part of the reason i like kb1 was bc it left alot of thing un-said where this one showed you everything. boo urns to a wedding rehersal. i did like the philosphical parts to it as it wasnt cheesy.

today was one of my most producitve work days inawhile. completed most of a report and worked on my essay that was due last week. i hate writting when i'm uncertain.

oh the distractions :)
leafs advanced
made VCDs of the last 2 24 epissodes
finaly watched the white stripes pretour among a few other videos.
and finaly blogger, to you put any considerations to astro signs. i think weather, time of conception, etc may hold truths in ppl... not the stars.

Tuesday, April 20, 2004

i signed up for the gmail thing, but now my housemate's got me all freaked out about
the privacy thing. dammit!!

saw this on msn. i like this:
Since Taurus is ruled by the element of Earth, they are sometimes slow-moving, or methodical people - the turtle, as opposed to the hare. Beware of the fast-moving ones, for they might be the ones for whom the term "bull in a china shop" was invented. Taurus natives like to deliberate for long periods of time before making important decisions, and often find their moments of greatest inspiration while appearing to loaf. Though it may look like laziness to others, this is just the Taurean's way of getting in touch with their best creative ideas.

if only it were true...! :D

heehee--concert listings from eye:
JOHN MAYER w/ Maroon 5, DJ Logic. Molson Amphitheatre. $29.50-$47.50 at TM. Aug 7.

PIXIES Arrow Hall (what the fuck?). $35 at RT, ST. Nov 24.

Friday, April 16, 2004

cgal, it might sell out...do you think you could get the unicorns @ dovercourt and three gut tkts?

btw, did i already mention that my guess is bss will play directly after the valley of the giants shows at the drake this weekend? it's the only way the rumours would make sense.

marc, did you get that car stuff figured out?

i am having a potluck picnic in the park and a bingo nite for my b-day next week. :)

Thursday, April 15, 2004

avrils latest track is about virginity, or not giving into one guy.
surprised me when the video starts with boy leaving her room in the morning.

crassy, i enjoyed your to.1 craig media post. i didn't expect anyone to actually comment about that :)

i'm for a late time showing of kill bill. 10:55 or what not.
the leafs play that night and hopefully they will beat ottawa out without OT needed.

do you girls ever get insaulted with ads that peg women down as the cleaners? i have been noticing quit a few of them.

i got an extention on my big essay due today..... but i still have a paper due 2morrow.
might go to the jays game sunday... got tickets.

i'm (somewhat) related to the bass player from billy talent!
i'm in for cuff the duke! do you think it'll sell out?
the DEARS?! no fucking way. marc, we have to go.
the unicorns, i'll get tickets for soon.
the fest' with sloan & sam roberts is $40 and i doubt will sell out...so i'm going to wait until i have the cash to buy tickets.

i'm tired! i'm sick!
i'll write more later!

"but I thought I was Cgal's twin?"
best line ever!

rach-you own. we'll make a date to exchange the typewriter for monkey love soon;)
and you've convinced me. i'm cutting my hair short. (so if it looks bad, i'll have you to blame;)

heehee, i think i'm banned from volunteering at nxne. and you have to work like a million hours to get a shirt. i'm exaggerating.

so the CtD thing (w/ gentlemen reg and royal city) is part of the three gut records celebrations. nice. may 29 is the constantines (w/ jim guthrie and someone else). may 7 is the dears at lee's. except there are also shows on may 8 and 9 that i want to go to. dammit. and apparently journal ppl are going to the cbcr3 unicorns show at the drake on may 9. but i wanna see sondre lerche. oh, the dilemmas.

BOO YA!! My evil plan worked and now it's sunny outside and warm!

Indeed, I quit Rogers, it's sad...I'll still be there hangin out night and day when I can of course. I'll miss little Jareet and little David and little Arlene. It was good times. :*)

Volunteering for NXNE is this sunday afternoon but I'm working...Might have to pull some strings. Anyone interested in NXNE, it's June 10-12. And you get a t-shirt! Yes!

When's Hillside?

Ding ding!

Murray

may 28!!! CtD @ horseshoe!!!! $12. gonna see 'em this saturday, too!!!

crissandra, you quit rogers? aww.

Tuesday, April 13, 2004

shiiit! the sondre lerche tkts at RT are already sold out!
cgal, get the unicorns ones if you can!

rach, the rock camp episode w/ bruce already aired...i keep friggin' forgetting to watch the show. :(

ahh...coachella. take me if you win! i was gonna try to get press passes somehow, but the whole transportation thing...yeah....

that sam roberts/sloan thing is the same fest w/ the constantines/the stills, i think. so that would be the same fest i posted the link for from chart. expensive...still thinking about it though.
buck 65...heehee...he was at hillside..remember, marc?

i won't be back yet crissandra (should be by the 26th), but go to joel plaskett!! i'm seeing him here on the 22, i think! and he's so cool!! he was a counsellor on rock camp!! :)

Yes!!! It's not that permanent, we have a life span of like what 80 years old. On the other hand, if we were living to be 300 then I'd re-think getting ink done ("he asked for a 13 but he drew a 31 his friends say he tries too hard and he's not too hip, but in his own mind he's the...he's the dopest trip!"). Sorry whenever someone says "getting ink done" you just have to sing the rest of the song. Anyway, it wouldn't hurt to be 100% sure but just think about the designs you can tattoo over it or the laser surgery for its removal if you really, really end up hating it. Go with what you think is cool right now and hope to still like when you're 80.

I'm completely sure as of now what I want drawn. I say we call it a field trip and pierce and tattoo the hell out of ourselves! Within moderation, of course.

Chris, that article was actually inspiring. It's so true though, we can't let 1 or 5 magazines rule the world, esp when Toronto is a whole community on its own. I'm printing it out and tacking it on...to something. Are you gonna be back for the 16th, this Friday, for Joel Plaskett @ Lee's? I'll go with you if you are.

I also want to go to this show on Aug 7th, it's with Sloan, Sam Roberts, Buck 65 (why do I keep hearing about Buck 65?), some others. But I'd want to see Sloan and Sam. $30 for 5 bands or so. Too far anyway.

lol, "Well, just the twins really... ;)" It had totally escaped my mind that I had just quit Rogers. lol, "but I thought I was Cgal's twin?"

CHUM actually already bought Craig Media but they're selling Toronto 1 asap. I think CHUM bought Craig for $265 million? I think Craig will be in better hands with CHUM. I was reading something in the Metro or NOW whatever and a reporter was just noting how "insulted" she was the way Craig treats Toronto like it doesn't have different, more eclectic tastes, than from out west. It's so true, though. You can hammer us down with as much MTV as you want, we're still gonna watch Much. And there's only so much crap you can take from one station that might as well be a second-rate CHUM/OMNI. Might as well watch said stations.

Anyone with a Bell phone, text message Bell Mobility to win 2 tix to Coachella. It'd help I'm sure if I had a number or something but that's in another room...actually car. But, so you know.

au revoir, gymboree.
yes, now that i've been brave & have decided that i'm going to do whatever makes me happy in life, i've quit my job! and no, i have no backup plan. but i could not exist in that environment any longer. it was killing me. so i join the unemployment bunch....not all too rushed to find a new job;)

christina: thanks for the article! i'm off to read it but, that's him that's him! the boy in the very final photograph! and no, he's not pudgy, but his face is chipmunk-ish;) i'm dissapointed that the bss shows were just rumours however i'm sure they'll play a show in toronto eventually. we have the whole summer to enjoy! oh and ps-we must go back to utopia;)

rachie: no way! you have a typewriter?!?! what do you mean about the 'tiny little screen' though? do you have to attach it to the computer? or does it work on its own? as long as the text looks oldschool typewriter, that's all i desire! you rock like no other! let me know how much you want for it...that's so cool. you've totally made my summer:)

i want a tattoo too, but will wait for it. i want my labret pierced for the summer, though..... still in debate.

and question: should i cut my hair even shorter? bangs and very chunky..i can't describe it. hmm..dilema dilema..;)

stina, you like wavelengths?
i found gizz butt's of prodigy's current manager on their board.
i used to hear ads for them on the radio and didnt exactly jive with the sound...
but they did pop up in alot of my google searchs. never seen the physical mag.

chum is selling toronto 1 :)

Cameron Bay.

ha, cam--i saw that on chart...i'm totally not qualified. maybe my old a&e editor will get it...he's been writing for them lately.

a good article, crissandra. wavelength is awesome. they gave a lot of ppl starts, like CtD, the constantines, bss, the hidden cameras...

fer cgal. that is kevin drew. i think it's a great interview.

Monday, April 12, 2004

leafs won, god knows how tonight.. belfour was incredible.
provided there is no leaf game.... friday KILL BILL v2.

vh1's shocking moments in rock n roll fascinate me.

need a job stina?

this is my hardest school week i think. i did pretty good studying the entire day at school with no distractions. there are no single distractions at school that i know, umm maybe 1.

then again, there is tv.
wtf, camel toe on speakers corner, that wasn't supposed to be the contest.

aww, i love m/c q's. i miss them, dammit.

my last day in k-town will probably be the 24th or 25th. but we can drive back afterwards if you want! my lease expires on april 30. i finish exams on the 19th. christine might be taking my place next year though, so who knows...

hmm. maybe bss are just gonna play after the valley of the giants shows that are going on at the drake. i don't see when else they can possibly play.

Sunday, April 11, 2004

hymmm im sure chum will have a contest. win and take me stina, piss off all the groupies.

neko case/the sadies/carolyn mark are playing really late shows at this after-hours place called the matador. one last nite and one tonite. wesley and some other journal ppl and i were supposed to go, but we ended up getting tkts to their horseshoe shoe on the 28th instead. these shows at the matador sound like they're gonna be a lot of fun though.

cgal, i think it was kevin drew then...he's married...he was at the stars show too...i don't really think he's very pudgy though...maybe he's been eating a lot lately?? yeah, i think he plays drums sometimes too...
the BSS shows are just rumours though...maybe someone mistook their little appearance at the stills show to be something bigger? i guess we'll find out...

holy crap. mraz is playing massey hall on may 18 and top tkt prices are fucking $45.50. add service charges and shite and it's gonna be $50+. who does he think he is?! radiohead?!!!? fuck that shite. i'm not going.

hey nadine,
i was always told about the dear around utm but never saw any when i was there.

cgal, u saw my lady?
aww, what was she doing, taking in the show?
i have been hearing alot about the minatures. all the canadian music pages seem to have a bit on them but i have never heard of them since before this week.

stina, where do u care to go so late?

I went on a hike today around the UofT/Erindale Park grounds...I saw 3 beautiful deer. Their tails were a beautiful, fluffy white. Made my day.

i wish you'd came!!! you could have bought tickets from a scalper, damn it!!!!!!! ahh, i was so mad too, i was excited and at the same time going 'omg why isn't christina here, omg omg!'. hmm..maybe it was kevin! he's newly married, and really scruffy, kinda chubbs but not really? beard, pudgy face, brown hair....he almost looks like that guy that came on stage for the stars show, helping out on drums or keyboard i think? but that guy was much more heavier....does that help??

brendan canning! awww, honestly how cute is he!? i wanted to run up to him and just hug him!!! no scarf on the waist (damn!) BUT he had on this bright green w/yellow striped windbreaker..soosososososoo cute.

i _doubt_ this is the 'secret show'...shit, shit shit, that's something i could have asked. but it was only 2 guys from BSS onstage, and only for 1 song, so doubt it *fingers crossed*

& 'the stills' are one of jays fav' bands, which i should have figured since him & i have always ended up loving the same bands:D

christina....summertime shows are going to be stellar. honestly, the vibes from every show i've been too lately have been out of this world..and i know we'll be able to find jobs!! everyone has already been asking me 'do you want a job here' there's so many connections..shouldn't be too hard. i'm going off to look for a job this week (i think?). i'm broke too..but we'll find a way! we have to. !!!!

i cannot wait until you're back here!!!!!!

AHHHHH....galine...i WISH I'D FRIGGIN' GONE NOW!!!!!!! i was here, too! dammit. but it was really sold out. aaq85345ahfifhasdfsdafsd.
but there is no "mike" in BSS...umm...the drummer was definitely justin peroff (he used to play the gay best friend dude in "my hero"! i loved that cbc show!)....hmm...who could "mike" be? it wasn't hot guitar guy, or you'd know who he was...umm...kevin drew? what did he look like? hahahha...little turtle/scarf-around-waist-man is definitely brendan canning (did he still have a scarf around his waist? eek.).
fuuuck...that better not have been the "secret" thing ppl have been talking about, or i will have a fit. you should've asked one of them if there were actually gonna be shows!! that's what you coulda asked him!!!
aww...sounded like a fun nite! and i should've guessed that mike and jay would be there. :)

i've heard about the miniatures...but haven't actually _heard_ them. heehee.

yes, this summer better be the summer of shows. and the summer of me finding a job to afford going to said shows.

CHRISTINA CHRISTINA CHRISTINA CHRISTINA!!!!! i whipped out my phone to call you last night, only to realize it was about 12:30!
THE STILLS show went beyond any expectations..... i've so much to say, so warning long post:
we got there around 8:50 & stood in line, when this beautiful girl walked by and i couldn't help but stare at her with my jaw dropped. i must have looked like a fool because she saw me, it was SARAH SLEAN! oh yeah, that's right. she's so damn cute and identifiable for the great earings. i also got a free pin of one of the opening bands 'the miniatures' it's really cute and a smart selling technique 'have a miniature pin' ahh..ahh! PUN. the pin was tiny and it's also the bands name. nice my friend.

we got in, grabbed our usual spot & shook our booty to the sounds of the opening band, 'memory bank' (at least i think that's what they were called). they were REALLY good and i wanted to buy their cd but their merch wasn't @ the table. really nice guys too, they said hellos and asked us 'our names' joel screamed the loudest so they said a 'hey joel' and 'it's joels birthday, somebody buy that man a drink!'. nicccce.
after this band, jay v., mike, fernanda and earl arrived....it was so nice being out with them instead of on the go bus or in the halls of york u. (this one goes for mike&fern). mike & jay purchased a stills shirt & i loved it so much that, that's right christina, i purchased my very first tee for $15!! (not bad. not bad at all;)
the miniatures came on...they kept urging the crowd to come closer to the stage, so earl mike & i ran to the front and danced for a few. it got kinda creepy though, as i felt i was staring up their noses, so i left.

we lost our spots to stand from a nice distance to watch the stills, and ended up right in front of the stage but it was honestly the BEST thing that could have ever happened. they played all my favorite songs, the two best being 'lola stars & stripes' & 'fevered'. Tim (singer/guitar) made it a must to say that they were from canada, and loved it here; that they'd been in the states doing a bunch of 'hooplah' but they're back and really happy & proud to be canadian and be in toronto. christina, these are the parts you'll love and made me laugh because i thought of you and the word 'incestuous'. between songs i noticed that the bass player, Oliver, had on a broken social scene shirt on (the one i wanted..damn!) and we later found out the drummer had one on too. during a song the bass screwed up and they had to pause a bit. tim talked to the crowd and told us he was really sorry, that things like this shouldn't happen and he felt bad, and then asked Oliver if he felt awkward. I screamed out 'I LOVE YOUR SHIRT!' and then mike and i 1,2,3rd like kids and screamed out 'we love BSS'. Then Tim went on this whole thing of how they just played shows with BSS, and how they were really great guys and helped them out on tour, and then asked the crowd to give a big round of applause for BSS. so the show was over, they thanked toronto, jay pointed out they didnt play 'still in love' and i said that they'd been coming back out in other performances to play a couple more songs...& they did! so they played still in love, sounded great, and the last song was the last track off their album..but guess what? oh yes, that's right, BSS MEMBERS CAME OUT TO PERFORM WITH THEM. the drummer ended up singing, said he was 'gay' and that 'mike' (i think that's his name?) from BSS and him were husband and wife, and so they sang the song together, and someone from BSS (black shaved hair, tall and white?) came out to play drums. they also made mention of how they were scared to play in toronto because we're known for our standoffish snobby vibes, but the entire crowd was so positive and receptive, they were happy and fed off it. it was INCREDIBLE!!!!!

so it ended, we kept repeating 'IT WAS GOOD. SOOOOOOO GOOD!' over and over like kids, i fell in love even further with the band.....and then mike/jay/dan (another guy who joined us through the night) decided to be groupies and ending up talking with the band and getting autographs. the drummer passed by joel, fernanda, earl and i so we chatted with him for a bit, and fern & joel made mention of the gay thing and he's like 'umm..i'm not gay' i burst out laughing b/c i thought they knew it was a joke..(oops!)...so it was really funny. however, the drummer seemed like a jackass, but maybe it was montreal humour and a french lack of communication!? tim was really nice though ( so i heard..yeah yeah i was too shy to approach him, i could have gone backstage if i wanted) but it's great to know that his stage presence leaked out into his real self and he was a real nice person:D and CHRISTINA CHRISTINA CHRISTNA! guess who i saw?!?!?!?! none other than little turtle/scarf around waist man from BSS!!!! they're EVERYWHERE I TELL YOU!!!!! so if (hopefully) they play a show..WE'RE THERE!!!!! i love them, they seem like great people, and they're ALWAYS walking around so approachable. i almost went up to him but had NO clue what to say. next time I PROMISE you and i will:D

ohohoh, and the guys from 'the miniatures' are so nice. earl bought their cd and mike was like 'can you autograph it!!!' nobody had a pen so they said they would after the show. but after the show earl didn't really care all that much and figured they would have forgot. so when we were outside, the miniatures were as well and screamed out to them 'hey! we're supposed to sign your stuff!' reallllllllly nice guys.

so all in all a great great night. photographs to come as jay took tonnes on his camera:D
and i KNOW this summer is going to be the best, because toronto is just rocking with great talent and shows....
and i'm so in love with it all. :D

cgalxxxxx

anyone wanna go to a show at around 2 a.m. tonite?? heehee.

wb to miss.

humber called leaving a message saying my "philosophy of love and sex" course was cancelled today. my mom was the one who took the message. haha

so excited over the leaf game.

found a pretty good white stripe bootleg in school yesterday. video where they played pretty much everything from their first 2 albums. i considered going back to school to buy it but i think 1 trader who is canadian has it. :)

oh yeah, i'm coming back to miss today.

forget the pixies, u2 coming to downsview this summer!?!, fuck yeah! i mean, boo-yeah.

" toronto music scene is quite incestuous"-stina
that made me laugh a fair bit. all your men.

i think stina had also posted something about moby's home. they toured it on cribs and it's a lovely place for a single man.

Cameron Bay.

*sniffs leaf playoffs..... learned the 24 chick 'girl next door' is that cute kid who was on Popular Mechanics for kids.

Tuesday, April 06, 2004

heeheehee...the pixies are coming to mississauga. :D first they decide to play their first gig in manitoba, and now they skip over toronto. love it.

there are probably gonna be 2 "secret" BSS shows at the drake near the end of the month...maybe one'll be on my b-day? they have to be after the 18th and before the 27th, 'cause they have shows elsewhere outside of that window, i think...fun! i should be finished exams by then!

yeah cam. i knew about most of the BSS-tND connections. i didn't know they knew brendan canning or evan cranley though. but it wouldn't surprise me--the toronto music scene is quite incestuous. dan kurtz produced leslie feist's first album. and i knew dan used to be in the same band as andrew whiteman (aka hot guitar man), but i didn't know jamie was such good friends w/ him...man, he seems to be friends w/ everybody. he even knows chad richardson ("mark" in the cdn cast of RENT!)!

anyone else notice sam robberst arm pit stains at the juno awards?
eesh and alanis to close things off? i think i missed most the good parts of this years show. il just rely on my memory of shania and her hockey outfits from last year ;)

interesting fest stina. i remember reading about death from above.... 2 piece band. did you know about the BSS and tND connections? i presume you would but if u have not, here's reference.

hymm other good finds of the day. one of the white stripes first dated show i have seen listed was in Toronto it 97. shanghai club or something or the other. stripes and chems are playing fugi rock.

google is coming out with an email service. free, 1GB, searching power.... some privacy concerns.

hey, sounds fun, although i don't know if i have enough $$ to afford all these shows.

i did have a good birthday, thank you
i will no longer think of gansta rap when i hear the words ice tea.
a few pictures, some good.

i was fine in the morning but forgot to change my clocks and missed church. had a good game of ball hockey. we were down 1-0 most game but 1nc our team turned things on we had 5 or more unanswered goals. i went down on 1 rush and scorred on it :)

leafs play ottawa in round 1 of the nhl playoffs.

stina, i saw a video bite of mraz on VH1's big in 2003 award show. john mayor and mraz both left comments on the Dixie Chick's quote. mraz said something about speaking your mind and stripping down.

HAPPY B-DAY, CAM!!
hope you have fun tonite.

thanks for explaining the tab thing, crissandra. i never knew that it actually defined the format of a publication...so exclaim mag would be considered a tab? wowies. the negative connotations of the word have really put a damper on it.

heehee, pics from journal dinner are up. i like this one:

it's formal night, and i ain't going.

Happy birthday Cam!!

"(hipsters aren't cool anymore, hating hipsters isn't cool anymore, being cool isn't cool, not being cool isn't cool, whatever you think is cool isn't, b/c you're already too late...so basically, give up)"

LOL omg, that made me laugh soooo hard. ("I'm cool because I don't care, right?" "No.") lol.

As for the hard copy, I'm thinking if I can promote a media kit appealing enough to make the local advertisers buy then I'm in control. I'll have a teensy bittersweet income as long as I come up with low rates, for the first while.

First I'd set up a magazine structure and estimate its reach/frequency goals and hope for a high readers per copy.

I'd look into where these magazines can be distributed (ie. book stores, music stores, transit stations, schools, etc.) and depending on where these can be distributed I can go on to estimate my ratings (reach- in ratio to the population and frequency- the amount of times a reader is exposed to a particular advertising message....of course these would all have to be ball-park figures) but obviously using similar print counterparts to build a comparison chart for it to sound appealing and let advertisers know where this publication is going so as to match the advertisers' advertising needs. And it wouldn't hurt to smash the competition before starting as much as possible in order to gain a higher index of brand development.

As soon as I get the advertisters' okays, I try to hook it up for the readers. Make it look pretty by looking for layout and design or I can make it really simple and just use my nearly non-existent knowledge of Adobe Illustrator to make everyone think I'm making it look shitty on purpose. Layout and design is just another hurdle and if everything else works out, it won't even be an issue.

As for content, I'll learn everything I'd need to learn if I have to provide all the content myself. If I can expense it (providing that's allowed for small time business), I'd like to visit festivals and local shows happening east to west, mostly Canada. That'll provide some content and then the rest will be sugar fairies and crystal plum.

Of course this will provide major schedule traffic over load but I'll work my way around it.

If I could really sway a co-worker at work maybe I can completely ditch the ads in the first issue and use Ryerson's printing press for free (but I already asked and that's a nay...but I'm gonna ask again and maybe I can get her to print several copies of a page one at a time to be less obvious and I can bind them--somehow??--myself....enter staples). The Ryerson thing is a long shot and is probably not going to happen, but nonetheless an option and just one of the several madwoman schemes in me noggin. I'm thinking advertising is going to have enter at some point, I'm just hoping not til the second issue.

See, this is all fine and dandy as a conceptual idea but it'd be way much fun. That is if I don't already get bored of the idea or if I can come up with something more appealing than just festivals and shows across Canada that ppl would want to read about. That would be a surefire dream job for sure. However, there's a lot in my head at this time and might have to put the magazine thing on the back burner for now or just as a part time hobby that'll take me six months to even do half the stuff mentioned above. But so you need to be reminded, anything can happen for anyone and I don't just mean that with me and starting up a magazine! The world is yours!!!!!!! :)

As for Now being a tab...that's me pursuing a smarty pants know it all level. But technically, Now is a tab. Tabs can be mistaken for a periodical full of celebrity gossip and trashy content (like your Star Daily or whatever or the National Enquirer), but Now is in tabloid format which is what a "tabloid" actually is. Just like the Toronto Sun, the Metro, Eye weekly are tabs...tabs are its printed format, which is a two sided broadsheet that folds open like a book. (Two points, first exam, first semester). Boo ya!

"I...am not sick, but I'm not welllll......and I'm so hot, cause I'm in helllll..........and then they had to commit me...you told them all i was crazy...they cut off my legs now i'm an amputee, god damn you!" laaaaaa.

thanks marc, i dont have a real finger on things right now. 6;30 at moxy's is still the plan.

page for a family friend. alot of love.
rip.

marc, did you get forms from hillside already?? did they mail them to you or something?

crissandra, you're right--i forgot that nxne happens around june...my head is in the clouds right now. you want to start up your own print magazine? do you have wads of $$$ to spend or some generous connections? 'cause it's quite expensive to have hardcopy publications unless you have either of the 2 above. especially in the "magazine" format you're suggesting. of course, you might be able to do it since you seem to have the expertise in the ad dept (i think), but even if you can raise enough $$ for a first issue, you'd also need ppl who know about the actual magazine side of things, like layout & design (which is what tessa is really, really good at), content, etc, etc. that is, unless you just want to print like 5 copies of whatever you want just for friends. or you could just make a 'zine.
anyway, now mag is a tab? explain?

ahhhhhhhhhhhh. i woke up about an hour ago. why? b/c i have no willpower. last night was the year-end journal dinner at an italian restaurant called gusto's (we also went to a pre-party at kate's place). it was quite nice--we got the whole lower floor to ourselves, and we were eating in what looked like the wine cellar (there were racks of wine behind each side of our looong table), but very nicely designed. the food was great--i had an eve's apple martini (cranberry--or was it raspberry? i can't remember--vodka w/ sour apple liqueur or something and 7-up, w/ a cherry), smoked salmon and leek soup (it was sooo good--it was either that, caesar salad or bruschetta), shrimp pasta (unbelievably tasty, although about 90% of the rest of the staff chose steaks--other choices were smoked salmon or chicken or some vegetarian pasta) and for dessert, i had tiramisu (there was also a chocolate truffle mousse cake or raspberry gelato). we also had wine.

after dinner, wesley and sarah presented us each w/ "joke" awards. i got "the nickelback award, for [my] undying love of high-quality music, especially this talented canadian band." hmph. but funny, i guess. i kind of spoiled the surprise of it b/c i sort of found the sheet where wesley was coming up w/ all the "awards" on his desk...oops. we also got t-shirts!! i totally wasn't expecting that. they're kinda cool--they have the journal logo on the front and our own last name's on the back, w/ "131" (our volume # this year) on the right sleeve. i love it. and i had no idea about it, and i live w/ wesley! he was missing all day yesterday though.
there were some tears when kate hopwood presented cards we'd all signed to wesley and sarah, and then they gave out the real awards--the business staff ones, the don munro award (it went to dave missio, who really deserves it), the contributor and journalism ones for staff writers...
the news asst. eds presented a gift to thulasi, the news ed...there were lots of heartfelt, impromptu speeches...
oh man, matt (asst a&e ed and co-editor-in-chief next year) came up w/ a whole rhyming tribute for us all that he wrote in class, that addressed each of us (apparently, i am to be commended for managing to live w/ wesley and i eat even more poutine than matt)--it was pretty funny.

afterwards, we all went up to the bar to do tequila shots, and then we hung around there 'til 1 a.m. at this pt, we all went over to cameron's house (not you, cam--another cam) for the after-party. ahhh...so much beer. it filled up 75% of the fridge. the a&e ppl eventually came and brought the pot, we found "sex cards" (don't ask), there was a crazy bird named mango going nuts in its cage, i had an oddly philosophical talk about photography w/ andrew, the photo ed, who then proceeded to plant a big wet one on my cheek while emily the asst photo ed tried to take a picture, but someone was in the way, omar (other co-editor-in-chief next year, production manager this year) asked me what all the kids think are "hip" these days (hipsters aren't cool anymore, hating hipsters isn't cool anymore, being cool isn't cool, not being cool isn't cool, whatever you think is cool isn't, b/c you're already too late...so basically, give up), dave tried to annoy me by drumming on my head and then propping his smelly feet on me, i ended up napping a bit, along w/ dave and alison...cam played his cd's (weezer, the strokes, tND!!, etc, etc). it ended up being something like 5:30 a.m., and matt comes up w/ this stupid idea to go down to the lake to watch the sunrise and then go to epicure for breakfast. most ppl have bailed by now, so there are around 11 or so of us left (alison and dave leave too), and as we head towards the lake, i realize that this is probably, no--definitely, a stupid idea b/c
a) i can already see stuff outside, b/c there is light out already, which means the sun is probably already out
b) it's overcast, rainy-ish weather and there are fucking clouds everywhere
c) it's freakin' cold out.

wesley's trying to convince me to go home, but i'm being stubborn, so we go w/ the rest of 'em, and of course it's miserable down there, so half of us catch a cab to the journal house while the other half walk there. the plan is to hang out there 'til epicure opens. wesley finally says he's going home, and kate leaves w/ him, but i re-awaken my addiction to snood on one of the comp's, so i stay. the rest of the ppl have fallen asleep on the couches upstairs, and it's crazily hard to wake them up. steve is playing awesome guitar music (karma police, the girl from ipanema), we finally force everyone to wake up, matt (whose idea it was in the first place!!!) and sarah (who thinks she has pneumonia now) decide to go home, as does tamsyn, so now it's just me, thulasi, cara (new copy ed next year), steve, shawn and cam. i feel like shit, but want to eat breakfast, so i go. i felt like i was gonna be sick and my head was pounding while eating, so i stopped, but on the way home i started to feel better. i got home, found kate on our couch, fell asleep myself at around 9 a.m.
why did i do that?! who knows.

even funnier--we're supposed to have an "anti-formal" tomorrow b/c most of us didn't want to pay $70 for a formal tkt, except now dave and matt want to postpone it 'til later so they can get more $$ by selling cd's...but doesn't that just not make it an anti-formal anymore, since ppl who went to formal can actually go to it?! argh. we might just go drinking again, but how different is that from last night? so sad.

von, i didn't find a fault in what crassy said, i offered her a suggestion with the persuit of her magazine.
the type writter thing with galine was so small. finding their faults a source of my pleasure?? i dunno about that.

count me in for hillside.
il email the lady this weekend.

marc, maybe kascata for 2morrow. i would have suggested it but i forgot the name of the place.
i feel bad for inviting ppl so late. i don't know who knows and who can come etc.

Yeah, why you be hatin'.
However, the idea isn't horrible it's just I like magazines better in hard copy. Maybe I can have an accompanying website to the magazine.

Oh, Chris Martin...I'll never stop loving you.

Speaking of Chris Martin, our little prodigy Matt Barber has a new place: my car cd player. The Story of Your Life is my new driving cd...well for as long as I can listen to the same 6 songs over and over again. What is that like 30 mins, not even? Haha. I love it. I need to find Means and Ends.

I'm up for Hillside depending on the lineup although I'm sure it'll be promising. As well as NXNE, I was actually thinking of volunteering for it. Just a way cool excuse to hang out downtown...but there's so much work involved. Bah, maybe I should just get a ticket this year...unless Corey can score some wristbands again...hmm....hook ups indeed............*thinks* This just might be the best summer ever.

Thursday, April 01, 2004

crass, why dont u start a weblog.... and see if from that maybe there should be something published in hardcopy?

i'm so happy!
"Faking It" is back on TLC with new eppisodes!
that show brings me on the verge of tears and cheers. i love it. it really changes lives, atleast i think it does.

moxy - 6;30
followed by pearl. cool?

I like the idea of the typewriter. I'm not very fond of the computer either and find writing things down on paper the most convenient, but not that that's a surprise *twin!*

Chris, do you really think it's okay to write about CMW for a summer issue? It'll be so forgotten and by then ppl will be expecting pieces on NXNE, don't you think?

I'm really itching to start up a magazine. It's just so much work I don't have the time to do it all. Unless anyone's interested in helping out... I just want a publication that delivers all the news and info and pics that I need. Not on just one thing like just fashion or just music, but everything and especially Canadian. We need to represent! And no shitty mags like Chart or Access. I want a mag form of NOW magazine (which sounds weird bc its actually a tab) that float in a month's worth of time and still be current and relevant. Easy enough, agree? I think I could do it if I dedicate all my time to it, but it'd be so much more fun if I had some help.

And not to bash Thirst or anything, I really like it and would love to submit once in a while but I'm gonna be greedy and want my own.

cgal, but if u want raw and real, shouldn't you go back to the beauty of calligraphy pen and ink?
haha il let this subject be.

rach, well i think we will have the picnic at moxy's
6;30. all invited
-catch a meal and the leaf game
then to....... pearl (or another club..do u really want to go Mod?)

i have been pretty indecisve. i would just make it a chill night at my house with games (risk/poker/brisk) and xbox but it's tricky dealing with scheduales now.

your all invited, your friends are all invited, and your suggestions are always welcome.
